Many research studies have investigated the conditions that foster professional agency in pre-service teachers. In this study, we explore the possible role of the dual pandemics - COVID-19 and United States’ reckoning with race - in shaping student teachers’ agency. Using content analysis, we compare the topics of the inquiry/advocacy projects completed for a graduate course, emphasizing agency, chosen by a 2019 pre-service teacher cohort to the topics chosen by a 2021 cohort. Findings show that the 2021 cohort had double the number of projects focusing on mental health issues. Also, one third of the 2021 cohort chose culturally-relevant and justice-oriented topics compared to only 20% of the 2019 cohort. Implications are discussed.
