Re-Evaluating the Factor Structure of an Academic Resilience Scale-ARS-30 Using Engineering Students

Abstract

Resilience is a major factor in students’ physical and psychological wellbeing. Researchers often seek to measure different dimensions of resilience in quantitative research studies. The Academic Resilience Scale was recently developed to measure resilience in an academic context. This study explored the factor structure and reliability of the ARS-30, with a focus on 223 engineering students. Participants enrolled in a foundational engineering course, completed an online survey of the academic resilience survey. Results from exploratory parallel analysis and reliability and validity evidences suggests that a four-factor model seems more theoretical consistent and might have better psychometric properties than the three-factor model. Scholarly significance is discussed.
