Marginalization and Resilience: The Job Search Experience of International Student Affairs Professionals

Abstract

This qualitative study explored job search and professional development of international student affairs professionals in U.S. higher education. Through interviewing seven current international student affairs professionals and two graduate students about their job search in the United States, four themes emerged: 1) aspirations for working in student affairs, 2) challenges and struggles during the job search, 3) resources and support for professional development, and 4) international identity as an asset. Findings showed that international student affairs professionals continued to feel marginalized and acculturated when seeking employment opportunities, while demonstrating resilience and leadership within the international community and U.S. higher education. Recommendations for how to improve support for international students and colleagues are discussed.
