The Geopolitics of Critical Race Theory in Educational Research and Potential for Black Feminist Interventions

Abstract

Critical race theory (CRT) continues to proliferate in educational research as an analytic framework for theorizing race and racism. In fact, CRT now adopts a transnational character. However, scholars must be attentive to the geopolitics of CRT knowledge production which if not careful, will continue to privilege U.S. Black critical thought while subjugating other Black critical analyses. This conceptual paper synthesizes recent literature that uses CRT in a global context, namely Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. We situate CRT within discussions of the geopolitics of knowledge production relative to the Global South and draw from transnational Black feminist scholarship as an exemplar for scholars of education who intend to move forward with more nuanced global conceptualizations of CRT.
