Factors Impacting Successful Integrated STEM Implementation in K–12 Education: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Previous research showed that integrated STEM has impacted students’ actual and
perceived learning, attitudes toward STEM fields, and interest in pursuing a STEM career in the
future. Accordingly, this present systematic review aimed at digging deeper into the factors that
underline the impact of integrated STEM. To this end, we reviewed previous integrated STEM
research to identify the factors that influence the implementation of K-12 integrated STEM
education. The results revealed four main themes: instructional, teacher-related, student-related,
and curricular factors that function in an integrated manner for successful integrated STEM
implementation. The results of this review also provide rich insights into the in-class practice and
future research both in terms of research design and factors to be included.
