Rethinking Social Justice Leadership in Contemporary Times: Lessons From School Leaders Navigating Diverse Contexts

Abstract

Drawing on research conducted with school leaders in the Greater Toronto Area between 2019 and 2021and using a qualitative research design, this presentation explores ways in which the narratives and experiences of school leaders in diverse urban contexts can help us to rethink social justice leadership within contemporary contexts. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. An actantial model informed coding and data analysis. A decolonizing educational framework also informed data analysis by examining the data for ways in which coloniality is perpetuated in schooling systems and practices. Areas are explored in this presentation: a) postionality of educators; b) educators working through resistance; and c) student engagement through anti-oppressive lens. These areas of practice are important in connecting theory to practice
