Abstract

HBCUs educate nearly one-third of all African-Americans in the U.S. (NCES, Fast Facts, 2019) and play an important role in providing access to and degree attainment for African-Americans, the fiscal viability of these institutions is crucial to an equitable higher education system. Due to discriminatory practices, HBCUs have historically been underfunded, and a number face financial challenges. As a result understanding successful HBCU fundraising strategies utilized is important. This study examines successful fundraising efforts of HBCU presidents. Key findings include the importance of data-driven strategic organizational plans and building effective relationships to advance HBCU fundraising. The findings from this study provide an asset approached, in-depth, practical understanding of fundraising at HBCUs from HBCU presidents who have excelled in the area.
