Teaching Is Political, and It Shows: Secondary ELA Teacher Diverse Literature Use and Attitudes

While diverse literature has gained popularity in K-12 classrooms, few studies have focused on teacher diverse literature attitudes (DL attitudes) and its correlation with teacher multicultural attitudes (TMAS). Using an original survey and the Teacher Multicultural Attitudes Survey (Ponterotto et al., 1998), this study measured the diverse literature use and attitudes of secondary English Language Arts teachers across three districts in a large, racially diverse city in the South. Among all the teacher factors including race, political orientation was the sole teacher-level factor that predicted both DL attitudes and TMAS. The more liberal a person identified to be the more positive their DL attitudes and TMAS. TMAS also predicted DL attitudes.
