Equal Odds? An Longitudinal Examination of Discipline Outcomes and Reasons in Three Urban School Districts

Abstract

The permeance of school discipline disparities is counter to the idea of education being a centerpiece to produce equitable outcomes in U.S. society (Gregory et al., 2010). The magnitude of school discipline inequities is more heightened in urban school districts whose student enrollment is composed mainly of Black and Latinx students.
This study utilizes three data points across the last ten years to; 1) determine the likelihood of in-school and out-of-school suspensions utilized for specific discipline reasons, and 2) investigate if the number of in-school and out-of-school suspensions over ten years have decreased for specific disciplinary reasons.
