Abstract

In this paper, I examine the circulating discourses around diversity, equity, and inclusion at Predominantly White Institutions (PWI) of Higher Education in the U.S. Through the lens of Critical Discourses Analysis and Critical Race Theory, I analyze diversity action plans that were issued by two PWIs between (2015-2020). The findings suggest that PWIs utilize corporate discourses to capitalize on diversity and celebrate it to rebrand their image as anti-racist institutions. The discursive representation of students and faculty of color in these statements perpetuates stereotyping and is embedded in White Supremacy. These findings urge educators to work within a more realistic paradigm toward social justice by problematizing the politics of "happy diversity" and dealing with racial realities on campus.
