Abstract

This paper addresses the need for teacher educators to embody the critical role of supporting pre-service teachers (PSTs) with disrupting the persuasiveness of whiteness when cultivating classroom communities. In order to cultivate an anti-racist classroom community, it is imperative to recognize the ways white dominant cultural norms shape classroom norms and interactions. Creating an anti-racist classroom community begins with rejecting white supremacist cultural standards and centering cultural and heritage knowledge (King & Swartz, 2016) that honors collectiveness, compassion, and multiple ways of knowing.
