Abstract

To consider and cultivate in students the full range of knowledge, skills, and mindsets required to thrive in the twenty-first century, educators need to rethink the purpose of education by focusing on holistic human growth. Japanese educator and Buddhist leader Daisaku Ikeda (2013) suggests we aim for human education, or the cultivation of the students’ full humanity with a harmonious balance of education of the intellect, the emotions, and the will. The authors undertook a three-part duoethnography that spanned five years in order to better understand the places where human education has lived and continues to live in our lives. We discovered that our experiences of human education were fully entangled with the places where we dwelled.
