Examining the Quantitative Characteristics of Preschool Language Tests: Implications for Practice

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine the quantitative characteristics of 11 preschool language tests to inform practice. The authors reviewed and evaluated 11 recently published preschool language tests against established published criteria. The quantitative characteristics evaluated were the standardization sample, reliability, test floors, item gradients, and validity evidences. Results yielded considerable variation across tests. That said, the majority of preschool language tests have well developed standardization samples and adequate reliability and validity evidences. Test floors, however, continue to remain problematic for preschool language tests.
