Development of a Rasch/Guttman Scenario Scale to Measure Teachers' Promotion of Sociocultural Integration

Abstract

Sociocultural integration is an objective of successful bilingual programs (Howard et al., 2007; Scanlan & López, 2014), and should become a core idea to reimagine school climate for the K-12 context. This research defines sociocultural integration in a teacher-centered way as knowledge and acceptance of our identity, attaching value to the identity of others, and engaging with them in equitable relationships. The development of the Sociocultural Integration Teachers’ Scale is based on this re/conceptualization, and uses the Rasch/Guttman Scenario Scale Development methodology (Author, 2020) to construct a valid measure that increases usabilibilty by providing clear guidelines on the progression of associated behaviors mapped onto scale scores.
