Abstract

This paper investigates the impact of historic residential segregation and present-day gentrification on residential and school segregation. This paper bridges the racial implications of urban renewal on school segregation using both stratification economics and critical quantitative methods. Using a unique dataset that merges the School Attendance Boundary Survey, the Common Core of Data, Census tract maps, and 5-year American Community Survey, this study investigates the relationship between residential and school segregation across the United States. This paper shows that there is a closer relationship between residential and school segregation changes over time in gentrifying neighborhoods.
