Developing Equity-Driven Instructional Leadership: A Model That Changes Behaviors

Sat, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

The focus of this research is to improve instructional leadership vis-à-vis tenets of effective clinical supervision and evidence-based informal observations supported by intentional conversations. Seventy-four school leaders in a one-year, university-based professional development cohort practiced using a set of evidence-based observation tools. Focusing on observable, equity-driven instructional practices is a direct approach to disrupting systemic inequalities through specific, actionable steps. A set of observation tools were specifically designed to promote equity in academic discourse, inquiry, and culturally responsive pedagogy. Emphasis was placed on how to engage in meaningful, evidence-based conversations with classroom teachers. Activities were developed and implemented to build capacity in both observational skills as well as post observation conversations.
