High School Mathematics Achievement by Ethnicity and Neighborhood Type

The Latinx population is the largest and most rapidly growing ethnic minority in the United States and are becoming an increasingly larger percentage of the school-age population. This paper investigates high school mathematics achievement differences of Latinx students by neighborhood type – divested urban areas versus gentrified urban areas. The findings in this paper provide insight into mathematics achievement of Latinx high school students in gentrifying areas. As Latinos become a larger portion of the student population in K-12 public schools, it is important that we increase the enrollment of these groups not only to ensure that they are doing well economically but the country as well.
