Antiracist Pedagogy Professional Learning Communities: A Study of Increasing Faculty Capacities

Abstract

Antiracist pedagogy asserts that not only should all members of a class community feel included, but to the extent possible, all beliefs, practices, instruction, and classroom experiences will disrupt the reproduction of racism and advance critical consciousness within the class setting. Antiracist pedagogy is an essential practice for educators who want to transform their teaching to disrupt inequities, and Professional Learning Communities are an under-researched, and under-utilized faculty learning strategy to accomplish this transformative goal. This study evaluates the effectiveness of faculty-centered PLCs to increase faculty capacity to advance antiracism. Using focus groups for qualitative inquiry with participants from three different semester-long PLCs, this study advances our understanding of professional community, faculty learning, and antiracist capacities in higher education.
