An Innovative Approach to the Seal of Biliteracy in a Local District

Abstract

This study examined the influence of the Korean Language Program of Rosemary School District (pseudonym) in Illinois on Korean-American youth students. The purposes of this study are to share the information of the equitably awarding the Seal of Biliteracy to students who possess the skill and knowledge in languages not offered through the World Language Department in high schools and to encourage other districts and teachers trying to start heritage and world language courses at the high school level in low incident languages. Through this case study, educators, teachers, and policymakers will have a valuable model of transformative literacy created at a district level with diverse students from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
