Making Sense of Me: Utilizing PhotoVoice and Critical Media Literacy to Empower Black Girls' Voices

Abstract

Black girls often see negative representations of themselves used in the media that often translate into educational settings they occupy. Unfortunately, Black girls are rarely given the space to make sense of media’s depictions of them and reflect on how it impacts them in these educational settings. This work highlights the utility of Photovoice, in conjunction with Critical Media Literacy, to help Black girls interrogate, critique, and explore depictions of themselves in the media by creating multimedia projects to counter the stories portrayed in society and tell their truths. This paper also presents an exemplar of a photovoice project for use in formal and informal learning environments.
