Examining the Differences in Reading Motivation Between Latinx and Other English Learners

Abstract

This study examined whether there are differences in the motivation profile of Latinx ELs when compared to that of other ELs. In total, 357 ELs in four elementary and two middle schools in a Midwestern state participated in this study. Results from Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling (ESEM) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed that Latinx elementary school students have higher sociocultural motivation compared to other ELs. Latinx ELs in middle school had a higher individual motivation in comparison with other ELs, particularly for practical advantages or benefits of reading in English and positive feelings about reading.
