Design-Based Research on Harnessing Spherical Video-Based Immersive Virtual Reality in Geography Education

Abstract

We have developed LIVIE (Learner-Immersed Virtual Interactive Expedition), a pedagogic framework that harnesses video-based immersive virtual reality to support (SV-IVR) virtual inquiry fieldwork in geography education. This presentation aims to report on our design-based research (DBR) project in which we attempted to, adopting LIVIE as an initial framework, further design, enact and evaluate what and how teachers could do in order to optimise students’ learning process in conducting immersive and interactive virtual inquiry fieldwork, with respect to upper-, average-, and lower-academic classrooms. The present work not only provides empirical evidence for supporting wider adoption of LIVIE in geography education, but also offers researchers new insights into deriving apt teacher facilitation strategies when leveraging SV-IVR in other subject areas.
