Equity in Design: Mixed Methods and Assistive Technology for Children With Disabilities, Teachers, and Families

Abstract

This paper describes the exploratory phase of an intervention called Step Up AT, an initiative that employs multimodal resources, practice-based coaching and classroom toolkits to support preschool children in the use of assistive technology for all aspects of early learning. We collaborated with Head Start (HS) schools in order to support the AT needs of children ages 3-5, their teachers and families. Following the intent of mixed methods design described by Mertens & McLaughlin (2004), we engaged in a series of collaborative sessions with HS stakeholders in order to be inclusive of perspectives as well as their disability, community, site, cultural and linguistic needs. Outcomes support these strategies as a means of building rapport and sustainability with diverse communities.
