The purpose of this study is to offer a different perspective for school improvement and transformation. Much of the current leadership practices for school improvement focus on linear or specific approaches in defined contexts. However, this leadership study highlights the challenges associated with maneuvering through different levels in an effort to achieve successful reform outcomes that honor the struggle for school improvement in an urban elementary school community. Specifically, this study focuses on how the principal with the support from teachers and parents led the transformation of the school to meet narrow system effective measures and to be successful in meeting the broader needs of students and the community.
