The (Miss)Education of the Black Girl: Black Girl–Centered Collectives' Impact on Educational Resilience and Persistence

Abstract

This comparative case study will explore the role Black girl-centered collectives and the utilization of Hip-Hop feminist pedagogy have on Black girls educational resilience and higher education persistence. As Black girls face a disproportionate rate of punitive policies and violence in educational institutions, Black girl-centered collectives have emerged all over the United States. A media content analysis of Baltimore, Maryland’s Lethal Ladies of Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women and Jackson, Mississippi’s Dancing Dolls, will be conducted to understand the impact these collectives have on Black girls and young women’s educational persistence and aspirations. This analysis will provide another vehicle that will assist in the resilience, liberation, and persistence of Black girls and young women inside and outside education.
