Examining Gender and Country Differences in Student Reflections of an International STEM Makerspace Community

Abstract

This study examines secondary students who work together in after-school settings to co-create STEM-focused media projects for sharing and discussion in video conference calls, or global online meet-ups. This paper uses epistemic network analysis to examine the reflective interviews of participants to compare differences in their experience. Key differences among gender include a focus on communication skills with female students and agency with male students. Comparisons by country found students in Kenya focused on technology skills, students in Mexico emphasized communication skills, while U.S. students were more agency driven.
