In recent decades, the forces of globalization and internationalization have transformed the field of education, as borders and boundaries have become increasingly porous and educational ideas, policies, and practices have become increasingly mobile. Against this backdrop, this paper examines the globalization of educational knowledge focusing on the local reception process. In particular, using examples from the Singapore educational context, this paper develops an understanding of the role of socio-cultural mediators in ‘refracting’ educational ideas, policies, and practices as they are received and adopted in the local educational field. In the process, the paper strives to contribute to practical considerations of cultural relevance in adapting ideas, policies, and practices from elsewhere.
