Emerging Themes of Graduate Teaching Assistants Training Programs: A Review

Abstract

Many universities provide training to graduate students to prepare their role as graduate teaching assistants (GTA). However, few studies reviewed whether GTA training programs match with the shifting demands of higher education. This study addresses the research gap by analysing and comparing GTA training programs offered by the world’s top 30 universities determined based on the QS University Rankings. Document analysis was conducted by reviewing public information from the program offering units’ websites. Findings were summarized into five common themes. While three long-established themes are foundations to classroom practices, this study revealed two emerging themes that are responsive to the demands in e-learning and inclusive learning environments. Inquiries for further research are discussed.
