Experiences of Formerly Incarcerated Students on Correctional Education

Abstract

This is an interpretive phenomenology study which explored the experiences of formerly incarcerated students on correctional education in South Africa. The theoretical framework which underpins this study is a Social Capital theory in youth research as promulgated by Bassani (2007). Purposive sampling was employed to select twelve (12) formerly incarcerated individuals who attended correctional education programmes in the South African Department of Correctional Services. In-depth interviews and narrative inquiry were utilized as data collection instruments. The main research findings demonstrate that the majority of respondents experienced a multitude of challenges when attending correctional education programmes in the DCS. The major findings highlight noise at night, correctional officials’ negative attitude, a high shortage of teachers and textbooks, searches at night
