Education Amid COVID-19 Outbreak: A Critical Examination of Increased Inequalities in Children's Right to Education

Abstract

Although school closures have a very large impact on more than 1.4 billion children in 191 countries due to the COVID-19 pandemic, challenges for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged student groups have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 school closures, highlighting major social and educational inequities for students on the margins. In this study, drawing on Fraser’s social justice framework as a theoretical lens, we focus on the education context of Turkey to particularly examine how K-12 education policies of the state are responding to COVID-19 pandemic to meet the needs of all learners, based on the analysis of a collection of newspaper clippings published in different national newspapers and publicly available educational reports published by several organizations.
