This paper discusses the impact of an app-based economy game on elementary school students’ understanding of multi-digit addition and subtraction and place value and attitudes towards mathematics. Researchers conducted an implementation study of the Market Bay app, with data collection taking place during remote learning amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Use of Market Bay improved students’ learning outcomes on a proximal assessment of multi-digit operations and led to positive changes in attitudes around interest in mathematics and usefulness of mathematics for real-world transactions. Market Bay use also led to unanticipated cognitive and socioemotional changes, including increased student collaborations and interactions around mathematics during a challenging period of remote learning.
