This paper describes the results of an investigation on the development of
global artistic citizenship in a group of elementary school students at the Luis
Vives Institute in Mexico City, based on the project "Opera, a Vehicle for
Learning" (LÓVA). Findings suggest that LÓVA has proved to be a powerful tool for the development of commitment,
collaborative learning skills, and social group participation. Artistic learning
can be used as a highly effective device for fostering citizenship skills. The
process of creation, development and performance of an original opera by the
students contributed to their awareness of rights and responsibilities,
increased their social commitment and participation, and fostered their
recognition and respect for diversity.
