An Investigation of the Role of Arrival Age in Immigrant Students' Mathematics Performance

This study examines the mathematics performance of first-generation immigrant students in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 by considering their age of arrival to their host countries: United States, Great Britain, Australia and Canada. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to analyze the data. Results revealed that first-generation immigrants who arrived in their host countries after the age of 12 scored lower than other students in the mathematics test. First-generation immigrant students who arrived in the host countries before the age of 12 performed as well as second-generation immigrant students and native students. Implications for the policy makers and mathematics educators are discussed.
