Significant Life Experiences From Autobiographies of Students in the Philippines: Additional Perspectives for Environmental Education

Abstract

The need for environmental education as a means to develop a global population aware of and committed to environmental issues becomes even more pressing in the modern times. Revisiting significant life experiences (SLE) and its implications in the 21st century context, especially in the less-studied Asia-Pacific country, the Philippines, may be critical for identifying some overlooked SLE and under-discussed implications on environmental education. In this study we determined SLE from autobiographical statements of 32 university students from the Philippines and found three previously-overlooked SLE categories, gaining additional insights on how environmental education can be approached in face of the worsening state of the planet. Implications of the findings to the design and implementation of environmental education were discussed.
