Profiles of Generic Critical Online Reasoning Among Young Professionals in Medicine, Law, and Teaching

Abstract

Research indicates substantial deficits in critical online reasoning (COR) skills among students and graduates. The present study addresses these deficits in the post-university phase by analyzing COR profiles among young professionals from medi-cine, law, and teacher training at the beginning of their professional training. Partici-pants conducted an online research on a relatable topic and evaluated the quality of the online sources they used. Latent profile analysis indicates that participants with more elaborated media use have considerably higher COR performance. Objectively gathered process data (log files) suggest that this group of media-acquainted partici-pants consults more URLs. Findings indicate that online media use should be sys-tematically addressed more in professional training to support apprentices in using digital media for solving vocational tasks.
