An International Investigation of Quality Teaching and Learning: Whose Perception Matters?

Abstract

Using PISA 2018 data, we investigated the outcomes of perceptions of teaching among teachers and students across 19 countries and looked at the relationship between those perceptions and student learning outcomes in literacy assessments. We analyzed data from scales of teaching practices related to reading comprehension, critical thinking, attentiveness to students’ individual needs/support for everyone, positive feedback and encouragement, as well as activation of prior knowledge. Consistently we found that students’ perceptions of teaching practices were more closely linked to learning outcomes than were teachers’ perspectives of their own teaching practices. These findings suggest the value in elevating and attending to the perceptions of students regarding quality teaching and learning practices.
