Busting through (or into) the Boundary: Understanding Transnational, Multi-Sectoral Research and Education Collaborations

This study uses concepts of boundary objects and boundary work to understand a transnational, multi-sectoral research and education in the Brazilian Amazon. In 1992, the Mēbêngôkre-Kayapó community of A’Ukre and Conservation International, an environmental NGO created the Pinkaiti Ecological Research Station (Pinkaiti). Labelling Pinkaiti as a boundary object, this paper traces social actors (community, NGO, and university) as they engage with cultural, geographic, knowledge, and institutional boundaries. The paper looks across actor groups and their relationships as Pinkaiti anchors partnership initiation, tropical ecology research, and finally interdisciplinary international education. Throughout, the collaboration focuses on Indigenous autonomy, environmental protection, and knowledge generation and sharing. The case study offers lessons for those seeking to engage with transnational, cross-cultural research or education initiatives.
