Abstract

Dr. Noguera maintains that race-conscious policies as well as culturally responsive and sustaining teaching must be implemented in inner-city schools to reduce the effects of institutional and structural racism. He also advocates reconstructing existing paradigms about race and stratification, deconstructing domination, and creating new possibilities by teaching for racial justice. Noguera believes that school transformation is facilitated by listening to communities, families, and students; implementing ethnic studies; applying intersectionality as an organizing conceptual framework; and respecting and incorporating students’ cultural capital into teaching and learning. Trust, collaboration, and support are also vital components of an effective school transformation strategy.
