Centering Broad Voices: Equity-Oriented Multimodal Methods in Literacy Research

Thu, April 21, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, Floor: North Building, Lobby Level, Rancho Santa Fe 1

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This proposed session centers the work of scholars engaging in equity-oriented multimodal methods of literacy research. We offer studies that disrupt dominant narratives about multimodal literacy research and the students and educators who author multimodal renderings. Together, we ask what equity-oriented research and analysis methods are best suited to investigate literate multimodal renderings? We conceptualize equity-oriented multimodal methods in literacy research as those that bring marginalized voices to the center by honoring varied identities, life experiences, and ways of knowing and build on extant rich critical multimodal scholarship to shed new light on the multimodal literacy research methods of scholars concerned with educational equity and justice.
