Session Summary

The Pandemic as a Portal: On Transformative Ruptures and (Im)Possible Futures for Education

Mon, April 25, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), Manchester Grand Hyatt, Floor: 2nd Level, Harbor Tower, Harbor Ballroom B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Reflecting on Arundhati Roy’s conceptualization of the pandemic as a portal, teachers, teacher educators, parents, youth, and children offer their visions of what lies on the other side of this portal. With the understanding that “nothing could be worse than a return to normality” (Roy, 2020, para. 48) this symposium offers insights into (im)possible futures, considering opportunities to rethink education and moving to abolish the harm enacted in and by schooling as it currently exists.
