Supporting Student Curiosity: Classroom-Based Research and Implications for Practice

Thu, April 21, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, SIG-Motivation in Education Virtual Paper Session Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Curiosity has numerous benefits for student learning and motivation. Yet, standardized testing and other educational demands provide potential barriers to encouraging curiosity in schools. This symposium brings together scholars investigating the following essential questions about curiosity: 1) How can educators trigger student curiosity and support its long-term development within classrooms? 2) Can curiosity be supported within existing educational contexts or does it require pushing forward the boundaries of effective instruction? and 3) To what extent does curiosity-promoting instruction facilitate related positive outcomes including student creativity, identity, interest, and openness to diversity? Through five presentations and a moderated discussion, this session promises to stimulate fruitful discussion about the practical and theoretical nature of curiosity, including examining curiosity’s position within motivation research.
