Teacher Identity and the Contemporary Development of Teachers in Educational Systems Globally

Abstract
Teacher identity has recently matured and gone global, which requires that the concept be updated. This symposium offers four teacher identity presentations representing multiple countries. The first offers a review of teacher identity research and practice around the world. The second examines how novices develop teacher selves in the Netherlands. The third investigates how student teachers in Portugal reconcile their pasts with their presents to (re-)construct professional beliefs. And the fourth presentation investigates intersecting gendered, sexualized, and racialized teacher identities in the United States. As a whole, the presentations consider teachers as holistic complex selves and, in so doing, examine how teachers actively construct themselves at the same time they are influenced by the educational systems in which they participate.
