Transgender Studies in K–12 Education: Mapping an Agenda for Research and Practice

Sat, April 23, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, Floor: South Building, Level 1, Pacific Ballroom 18

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Trans identities and experiences are typically subsumed under and only marginally addressed within the broader LGBTQ-based education literature. This session focuses on the experiences of trans, nonbinary, and gender creative people in K-12 schools. The papers are the result of a 20-person conference on Trans Studies in Education. Papers attend to a wide range of topics that represent a comprehensive account of K-12 educational experiences for trans individuals in the United States and Canada. Individually, each paper documents the existing knowledge base and includes recommendations for affirming educational practices and future research. Collectively, the papers in this symposium session position the field of education to take up the challenge of education inequity for trans individuals in our K-12 schools.
