A Critical Perspective of Conducting Open Science Qualitative Education Research

Abstract

In this symposium, we discuss and question the role of open science within the qualitative research realm. Basing this session on practical and philosophical concerns, we present four papers that understand other fields’ incorporation of open science, describe how qualitative researchers share data and conceptualize transparency, and detail how open science practices have serious ethical considerations unique to educational contexts. Within each paper we analyze how open science practices may have the ability to promote or indeed discourage equity from both the researcher and participant perspective. The symposium will prioritize interaction and discussion of how (or if) qualitative educational researchers should utilize open science practices and how to align open science with the values and epistemologies of qualitative research.
