Another Teacher Education Is Possible: The Case for Ethnic Studies and the Preparation of All Teachers

Abstract

This session involves scholars whose work examines how Ethnic Studies Teacher Education can be implemented across pre- and in-service professional development. We present research that: 1) explores Ethnic Studies mentorship for aspiring K–12 educators; 2) investigates the development of an Ethnic Studies elementary credential pathway; 3) examines the development of an Ethnic Studies masters program for in-service teachers; and 4) explores the impact of Ethnic Studies professional development with in-service teachers at a K–8 school. We aim to demonstrate the potential of Ethnic Studies Teacher Education to foster teacher development of an Ethnic Studies pedagogy. To this end, we offer insight for pre-service programs on ways educators can better serve historically marginalized students through Ethnic Studies.
