This symposium is designed to broaden awareness about the potential that bifactor modeling may provide to motivation researchers who wish to model data in ways that more closely align to theories of motivation, improve the fit of their models to their data, and provide opportunities to consider more precise solutions when applying methods such as latent profile analysis. Papers demonstrate how bifactor modeling of the general and specific components of learners’ expectancies, values, and costs, achievement goals, and interests inform nuanced analyses and produce novel findings that advance the study of science and mathematics learning, learning in informal contexts, teachers’ motivation, and teaching quality. Discussion focuses on critical but constructive appraisal of methods and key considerations when applying bifactor models.
