Beyond Epiphanies: Critique of Whiteness in Teacher Education and Society by Women of Color

Abstract
As the field of whiteness studies grows, many scholars are employing Critical Whiteness Studies. Some are adamant that the study of whiteness must be undertaken by whites, a process that often does not cite scholars of color. Others recognize that Black scholars initiated the critique of whiteness, but in this recognition rarely draw substantially from their scholarship. Others also claim CWS in ways that fixate on white racial epiphanies. Still, many questions remain. How can one employ CWS? How do scholars of color conceptualize CWS and what can we learn from their work? Can CWS advance racial justice? To offer some perspective, this symposium reasserts women of color’s voices in the critique of whiteness.
