Standing With Youth, Parent, and Community Educational Leaders: Case Studies in Subverting Systemic Oppression

Abstract

This session, based on a forthcoming edited volume, promotes a different vision for equitable educational transformation, one in which the leadership of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities forms the foundation. The session aims to help the educational leadership field stand in solidarity with BIPOC youth, family and community leaders and subvert systemic oppression. Bringing together scholars who engage in research with youth, parent, and community leaders and activists, this session presents critical case studies that interrogate existing participatory structures and inequities in schools. Aligning with the 2022 AERA theme, we argue arguing that a key element of an equitable education system is shared governance that centers and promotes the existing leadership of BIPOC youth, families, and communities.
