Infectious Learning and Teaching: Opportunities and Challenges of Integrating COVID-19 Into K–16 Education

Abstract
Much attention in educational research over the past year has focused on the impact of COVID-19 on school closures, learning loss, teaching situations, and online access. This symposium focuses on an equally important topic that has received far less attention: what students and teachers need to learn about COVID-19 and future epidemic outbreaks. Presentations focus on three aspects of infectious disease education: (1) students’ understanding of and everyday practice with the COVID-19 pandemic, (2) teaching approaches about infectious disease and COVID-19 specifically, and (3) innovative digital tools to broker student and adult learning and practice about epidemiology. The discussion will focus on how we connect infectious disease learning to existing standards and frameworks, which approaches are promising, and for whom.
