Reading Recovery: Long-Term Effects and Cost-Effectiveness Under the i3 Scale-Up

Abstract

A $55M Investing in Innovation (i3) Scale-Up grant funded the expansion of Reading Recovery in more than 1,400 schools. Previous results from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) involving over 8,000 students produced rigorous evidence of large short-term impacts of Reading Recovery on reading scores. However, the delayed treatment design of the RCT made it impossible to estimate long-term impacts since the control group students received the intervention during the second half of the school year. This symposium presents findings from an IES-funded efficacy follow-up study of the long-term effects and cost-effectiveness of Reading Recovery, using a regression discontinuity (RD) design to follow a parallel sample of nearly 9,000 students through 3rd and 4th grades.
